Royal Yacht Alberta

The Royal Yacht Victoria And Albert leaving Portsmouth dockyard in 1902. The King was on board the royal yacht during the Naval Review which took place at 2pm he then received the flag officers and captains of the vessels present at the review.

The King and Queen on board the Medina with members of their suite and officers of the boat while on their 1911 voyage to India. His Majesty stands in the middle, seated on chairs are Hon. Venetia Baring, Earl of Durham, Countess of Shaftesbury, Duke of Teck, Her Majesty the Queen, Marquis of Crewe and Duchess of Devonshire. Others grouped around the King include Earl of Granard, Earl of Shaftesbury, Sir Charles Cust, Sir Derek Keppel, Lord Charles Fitzmaurice, Major Clive Wigram, Sir Charles Fitzwilliam, Captain Forbes Trefusis and Captain Godfrey Faussett.

HMS Alberta - Name History

           The “Alberta” was a Royal paddle yacht, launched at Pembroke in 1863.  She was of 370 tons, 1200 horsepower, and 13 knots speed.  Her length, beam, and draught were 160ft, 22ft, and 8ft.

           In 1912 this Royal yacht was broken up at Portsmouth.

HMS Enchantress - Name History

The fourth “ENCHANTRESS” is a twin-screw Admiralty yacht, launched at Belfast in 1903.  She is of 3470 tons, 6400 horse-power, and 18 knots speed.  Her length, beam, and draught were 320ft., 40ft., and 16ft. This ship is the special service vessel, or official yacht, of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty in times of peace.  In war time she becomes a hospital ship.

The order to build a Royal Yacht as replacement for the obsolete Victoria and Albert was placed in February 1952 with John Brown & Co Ltd. The Clydebank yard won this contract largely because of its experience in building the prestigious Cunard Queens and Caronia. Launched in April 1953 by Her Majesty the Queen, Britannia was the most modern in a long line of Royal Yachts dating back to King Charles IIs Mary, 1660. Britannia was designed as a dual function vessel - as a Royal Yacht in peacetime an as hospital ship in times of hostility. Although built under post war austerity conditions, she provided a classical, well-balanced profile, with meticulous attention paid to detail. Features included innovative funnel design, bulbous bow, stabilisers, superstructure tested in a wind tunnel, and the steel hull rivetted than machined flush above the waterline to give an immaculate finish. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh took personal interest in the interior design, choosing for the Royal apa.........
