Pensacola Class

The Pensacola class of heavy Cruiser was USS Pensacola and USS Salt Lake City. These were the first cruisers built after the signing of the Washington treaty..

USS Pensacola was built at the New York Navy Yard and launched 23rd January 1929. During World war two. she served 1942 to 1944 at Midway, Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal, Tassafaronga and it was here  USS Pensacola was badly damaged.  returning to action at the Gilbert Islands, Kwajallein, Iwo , Okinawa and the Pacific raid.  She survived the war, only to be used as a Bikini Target Ship during 1946 and finally sunk 10th November 1948

 

USS Salt Lake City was built at the New York Navy Yard and launched 25th April 1929. During World war two. she served between 1942 and 1945 at Guadalcanal-Tulagi, and Cape Esperance where she was damaged.  USS Salt lake City was also damaged at Komandorski islands, Attu, Gilbert Islands, Kwajalein, Leyte, Iwo, Okinawa and Pacific raids

Displacement: 9,100 tons,  Speed: 32.7 knots,  Crew 1200 .  Armament: Eight 8 - inch Guns, Eight 5 - inch Guns  Two Aircraft.

USS Pensacola (CA24) 25th April 1929 Sunk on 10th November 1948.
USS Salt Lake City (CA25) 23rd January 1929 Sunk on 25th May 1948.
