Moving Mountains - Tribute to Maggiore Vittorio Minguzzi and 22° Gruppo Autonomo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The defense of Naples and southern Italy in World War Two was a desperate affair for the Regia Aeronautica who found themselves massively outnumbered as the Allied invasion progressed. Based at nearby Napoli-Capodichino, the Macchi 202s of 22° Gruppo Autonomo suffered terrible losses whilst trying to defend the port against the Allied heavy bombers, but nevertheless pressed home spirited attacks on the B-24s and their escorts. Here, Italian ace Maggiore Vittorio Minguzzi leads a trio of M.202s around the iconic crater of Mount Vesuvius.

Tribute to Lt Cdr Eric 'Winkle' Brown by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

One of the most experienced and respected test pilots in history, Eric 'Winkle' Brown carried out the first landing and take off by a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier on 3rd December 1945. This was accomplished in the second prototype De Havilland Vampire LZ551/G which had been extensively modified for the sole purpose of carrier operations. Not only was an arrester hook added, but the aircraft featured larger flaps and was fitted with the more powerful Goblin 2 engine. The first take off by a jet from an aircraft carrier is depicted here as Lt Cdr Brown lifts away from the deck of HMS Ocean on that momentous day.

Take it to the Bridge by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Take it to the Bridge by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

As cuts to the RAF and other armed services by the Labour Government were implemented in the late 1960s, Flt Lt Alan R Pollock of No.1 Sqn took it upon himself to stage a very personal protest whilst en route to West Raynham from Tangmere on 5th April 1968. Peeling away from the rest of his flight immediately after take off, Pollock flew low-level to London where he buzzed the Houses of Parliament three times before flying his Hawker Hunter FGA.9 under the upper spans of Tower Bridge. The incident is now part of British aviation folklore, but Pollock was immediately removed from flying duties for his audacity. He will always be recorded in history, however, as the first pilot to fly a jet aircraft through Tower Bridge.

Oblt Friedrich Navratil by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Born of Croatian parents in Sarajevo in 1893, Friedrich Navratil served under the Austro Hungarian flag throughout his considerable military career, becoming an outstanding pilot with Flik 3J on the Italian Front. He is depicted here chasing down a Hanriot of 72A Squadriglia da Caccia over Val del Concei in August 1918 to claim his third of ten victories. Navratil's distictive Albatross D.III (Oef) 253.06 was easily identifiable by his personalised 'Pierced Heart' emblem and is unusual in sporting the then new Balkenkeuz cross, untypical of Austro-Hungarian aircraft in WW1.

Battle Over Bembridge by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

At the very height of the Battle of Britain in August 1940, there was a great deal of furious fighting above and around the Isle of Wight. Monday 12th was an especially busy day for RAF Fighter Command, not least the Hurricanes of 601 Sqn, one of whom claimed this Messerschmitt Bf.110 in the skies above Bembridge, the two crew Staffel Kapitan Hptmn. Kulbel and his observer Offz. Budig losing their lives as their aircraft plunged into the sea.

Looking for Business, March 1918 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Arguably the best known of all World War 1 fighter aces, Mannfred von Richthofen, the 'Red Baron', is depicted here flying Fokker Dr.1, serial No 425/17, in its final livery following the introduction of the Balkenkreuze, early in 1918. Contrary to popular belief, this was the only Triplane flown by the Rittmeister that was painted all red and was also the aircraft in which he lost his life on 21st April 1918, the celebrated ace having scored a confirmed 80 victories against allied aircraft over France. His brother, Lothar von Richthofen, also flew with Jasta 11 and his aircraft can be seen close by with the all-yellow rear fuselage. Pilots of von Richthofen's 'Flying Circus' were permitted to paint their aircraft in their own personal colours, provided that they retained the red cowl, struts and wheel covers that denoted Jasta 11.

Hindenburg at Baltimore by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Hindenburg at Baltimore by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Late in the afternoon of Saturday, 8th August 1936, the giant German airship Hindenburg appeared in the sky above Baltimore. Unable to land at nearby Lakehurst due to unfavourable weather conditions, her Captain Ernst A Lehmann made the decision to take his passengers on a sight-seeing tour until the weather conditions improved, taking the great ship over Atlantic City and Washington before heading north to the city of Baltimore where she circled twice at an altitude of just 1,000ft. After 15 minutes, the Hindenburg slid away to Philadelphia, finally landing at Lakehurst at 18.05 after a 5,060 mile flight from Germany which she achieved in 67 hours and 31 minutes.

Tribute to Hans-Ulrich Rudel by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The most highly-decorated Luftwaffe pilot, Hans-Ulrich Rudel is the sole recipient of the Golden Oak Leaves supplementary award to the Knight's Cross, to add to the Swords and Diamonds. These awards reflect his quite incredible achievements with the Ju87 Stuka dive-bomber - he flew more than 2,000 missions, claiming more than 500 tanks amongst around 1,500 ground targets destroyed, plus a battleship, cruiser, destroyer and other shipping, as well as a number of trains. Additionally, he flew more than 400 missions in the Fw190 fighter, and is credited with 11 air victories. He lost a leg in combat near the end of the war and was later captured by the Allies, remaining in a POW camp until 1946. He is depicted here in his Ju87 lining up for an attack amongst the snowy landscape of the Eastern Front. Hans-Ulrich Rudel died in 1982.

Tribute to David Rittenhouse by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Schneider Trophy is one of the best known air races in history, but excluding a modern revival, there were only 12 of the events held between 1913 and 1931 when Britain won the trophy outright. This painting shows the first of two American winners of the prestigeous competition - Lt. David Rittenhouse of the US Navy - taking off in his Curtiss CR-3 Racer from the Solent on 27th September 1923. With an average speed of 177mph, he was the first competitor to exceed 150mph. When the competition was next held just two years later, the winning average speed was now more than 230mph and the winner was the only other American to win the trophy - one James Doolittle, who went on to become a famous wartime General.
