Sledgehammer by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Sledgehammer by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Regarded by some in the Air Ministry as a failed fighter, the mighty Hawker Typhoon was unrivalled as a ground attack aircraft, especially in the crucial months immediately prior to - and after - D-Day when squadrons of Typhoons operated in 'cab ranks' to smash the German infrastructure and smooth the passage of the invading allied force. This aircraft is Mk.1B (MN570) of Wing Commander R E P Brooker of 123 Wing based at Thorney Island.

Gefreiter Jakob Tischner - Roland D.VIa by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Gefreiter Jakob Tischner - Roland D.VIa by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The LFG Roland D.VI did not enjoy the success of its contemporaries, the Fokker D.VII and Pfalz D.XII, but was nonetheless a potent and capable fighter. Its unique Klinkerrumpf fuselage construction made it both lightweight and robust although, despite its qualities, it was not built in large numbers. This particular example, a D.VIa, is shown chasing down a damaged Sopwith Camel whilst being flown by Gefreiter Jakob Tischner of Jasta 35b. Tischner later wrote off this aircraft in a landing accident when he rolled into a parked Pfalz D.III, destroying both machines.

Phonix D.I by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Resplendent in the striking colours of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, a pair of Phonix D.I fighters are depicted on patrol in the late Spring of 1918. Although largely unpopular with pilots, the type acquitted itself well in service, possessing a superior rate of climb to the Albatross D.III, superb stability and a very low stall speed. A significant number of victories were achieved on the type and many examples were still in service at the end of the war in November 1918.

Capitaine Rene Fonck by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Capitaine Rene Fonck by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The highest scoring allied ace of World War 1, Rene Fonck was born on 27th March 1894 and spent his early military service with the 11th Regiment of Engineers before being sent for flying instruction in the spring of 1915. Almost as soon as he had been assigned to combat duties, he began to score and was posted to Groupe de Combat No12, the famous Storks where a combination of superb airmanship and deadly accurate gunnery ensured that his victory tally continued to grow. By the end of the war, Fonck was credited with a commendable 75 confirmed victories, but it is likely that he may have been responsible for a further possible 69 kills, which would have taken his total score to 144 - 64 more than Manfred von Richthofen, the notorious Red Baron. Capitaine Rene Fonck is shown in one of his Spad S.XIIIs chasing down a DFW C-Type.

Typhoon! by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Typhoon! by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

So often overshadowed by its own achievements as a ground attack aircraft, Hawkers mighty Typhoon also proved itself a formidable adversary in air to air combat as demonstrated by the successes of F/Lt (later Wing Commander) J R Baldwin who claimed no fewer than three Bf.109G4s in the skies above Kent on 20th January 1943 in a single sortie. Baldwin finished the war as the highest-scoring Typhoon pilot of all with 15 confirmed victories, one shared, one probable and four damaged. He was tragically lost over Korea in 1952 whilst on an exchange posting with the USAF, but is depicted here at the peak of his powers, flying Typhoon 1B DN360 (PR-A) of 609 Sqn.

First Across the Pond by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

First Across the Pond by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

In one of the most fraught and epic pioneering flights ever made, John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown became the first men to fly across the Atlantic from St John's, Newfoundland to County Galway in Northern Ireland in June 1919 in a slightly modified Vickers Vimy. The Secretary of State for Air, Winston Churchill presented the two British pilots with the Daily Mail Prize in honour of their achievement that had been completed in less than 72 hours of continuous flying, mostly in the most dreadful weather conditions, battling with reliability problems in the aircraft and the extreme cold that threatened to bring them down in the middle of the ocean. King George V awarded them the KBE one week later and their place in history was secured.

The Last Victory by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Last Victory by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The terrible battles that raged between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies on the Piave river in Northern Italy in June 1918 had already claimed many thousands of lives on both sides, but as the Italians drove the Austro-Hungarians back, things were to take a defining turn for the worse, as torrential rain and melting snow caused the river to flood, sweeping away bridges, boats and men alike. The Italians continued to bombard their retreating enemy and rake them with machine gun fire as they tried to cross. Italian and Allied aircraft too joined in the ruthless destruction of the beaten Austro-Hungarian forces and soon only one pontoon bridge remained. On 20th June, an Italian SIA.7b attempted to bomb this final lifeline, but its efforts were thwarted by the red Albatros D.III (Oef) of Hauptmann Godwin von Brumowski who immediately downed the intruder to claim his 35th - and final confirmed victory, despite his own aircraft being hit no less than 37 times. An estimated 60,000 .........

Just how vulnerable the pilot and observer of a Messerschmitt Bf.110 were during the early stages of the war is ably demonstrated in this view from the cockpit of a Bf.110C-2 of 1/ZG 52, based at Charleville during the Battle of France in June 1940. Later versions featured an armoured seat and head protection for the pilot.

In the Lap of the Gods by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

As part of Operation Noball on 28th February 1944, De Havilland Mosquito FB MkVI HP926 was severely damaged by flak over northern France, the explosion ripping away sections of the tailplane and rudder. Using all his skills and experience, F/O David Avery managed to wrestle the crippled aircraft back across the English Channel before he and his Navigator W/O Leslie Brodie baled out over southern England, having turned the aircraft back toward the sea, where it crashed harmlessly.

Tribute to Alfred Grislawski by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Credited with more than 130 victories in World War Two, Alfred Grislawksi scored 24 of these on the Western Front. He is depicted here flying his Me109 with JG53 in what would be his last combat on 26th September 1944. Having shot down a P-38 Lightning earlier in the day, he was shot down in the combat shown by the P-51 Mustang of American Ace Hub Zemke and bailed out. Opening his parachute very low for fear of being shot at, he landed hard and damaged vertebrae, and did not recover before the end of the war. Awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, he died in 2003 aged 83.

Tribute to Ltn d R 'Willi' Nebgen by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Flying with Jasta 7, Willi Nebgen scored four confirmed victories but sources suggest he shared in at least two others, meaning he most likely attained the magic number of 5 victories to make him an Ace. Shown here in his Fokker D.VII in the summer of 1918, it was painted all black except for the green and white diagonal flash on the fuselage. He was killed in action on 22nd October 1918 and is buried in West Flanders, Belgium.

Tribute to James G Struthers RNAS by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The airship was formidable as an anti-submarine weapon in the latter stages of World War One. The British formed patrols guarding the coasts of the British Isles and significantly reduced the toll on shipping that the German U-boats were taking. Here, the C or Coastal Class airship C-9, commanded by Flight Commander (later Major) James G Struthers has discovered and successfully bombed another victim - one of seven in total he claimed during he war. C-9 was the most successful airship of her class, flying over 2,500 hours and covering 68,201 miles in her four year career. Her commander, James G Struthers, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Bars.

Tribute to Terry Bulloch by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A prominent aviator in the Battle of the Atlantic, Terry Bulloch flew B-24 Liberators with No.120 Sqn in an anti-submarine role. Already awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for shooting down two German aircraft in a No.206 Sqn Lockheed Hudson over Dunkirk, he was awarded a Bar to this when he sunk U-boat U-597 in October 1942. After another attack, this time sinking U-132 and damaging U-89, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and gained a Bar to this on leaving No.120 Sqn at the end of 1942. Bulloch is seen here on 8th July 1943 in Liberator GR Mk.V BZ721 of No.224 Sqn having completed his hat-trick of U-boat kills, this time sinking U-514 in the Bay of Biscay. This type had been modified by RAF Coastal Command to carry rockets, which Bulloch had used to attack the submarine, finishing it off with depth charges. After the war, Bulloch became an airline pilot, crossing the Atlantic on more than 1,000 occasions. He died in 2014.
