One in the Bag by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A German Albatross D-III sees off a Bristol Fighter among the clouds over the Western Front, early in 1917. The D-III was a massive improvement over the monoplanes of the time, possessing greater manoeuvrability, a higher ceiling and synchronized guns. Many German aces thought this the best fighter of the First World War.

Major William Barker VC, DSO - Nearly an Ace in a Day by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Flying Sopwith Snipe E8102 on 27th October 1918, Major William Barker encountered a flight of fifteen Fokker D.VIIs and decided to take them on single handed. Having downed one enemy aircraft, Barker was wounded in his left thigh and momentarily fainted. Coming to, he found another D.VII ahead of him and immediately resumed the battle. Another bullet now tore into his right leg and another shattered his left elbow. Despite his terrible injuries, Barker shot down three D.VIIs and drove the others off before crash landing his bullet-riddled Snipe in friendly territory. He survived the crash and was awarded the VC for his gallantry on this epic flight.

AGO C.1 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

AGO C.1 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

At the outbreak of World War 1, AGO Flugzeugwerke GmbH had not endeared itself to the architects of the German war machine due to the flimsiness of some of its designs, coupled with poor workmanship. When the C.1 first appeared in 1915, it attracted little interest and yet went on to prove itself to be a robust and useful aircraft, its pusher design dispensing with the now traditional open framework to support the tail in favour of twin streamlined tailbooms. The observer / gunner in the nose enjoyed an unrivalled field of view, although the engines position immediately behind the pilot was always a concern in the event of a crash. This aircraft, LF181, transferred from the Fliegertrouppe to the navy in 1915 and was based at Nieuwmunster, shown here in an exchange with an FE.2b in the skies over Belgium.

Red Tails by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Often described as the most effective fighter escorts in the US Army Air Force, the famous red-tailed Tuskegee airmen could proudly boast that they never lost a single bomber to enemy fighters in all the missions flown. Nearest aircraft here is the P51C of Lt. Lee A Archer Jr, who finished the war with four confirmed victories and one shared. His personal aircraft was named Ina the Macon Belle after his wife.

Ace of the Isonzo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Ace of the Isonzo by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Scoring a handful of victories in May and June of 1917, Austro-Hungarian ace Godwin von Brumowski added steadily to his ever-increasing score on the Italian Front. But in August, with the increased Italian activity in the air in preparation for and during the 11th Battle of the Isonzo, he entered a period of extraordinary success, scoring 18 victories between 10th and 28th, most of these being scored in his favorite Hansa Brandenburg D.1 (KD) 28.69 Star-Strutter, depicted here above Plava on the banks of the Isonzo river, sending a Caudron C.IV down in flames on the early evening of the 11th, his second for the day. Brumowski's aircraft was notable for its camouflaged upper wing surfaces, a swirl pattern in olive greens that he had designed himself and which blended his plane into the green wooded foothills of the Southern Austrian Alps, North of his base at Sesana, outside of Trieste.

5K+AR Sole Survivor by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

5K+AR Sole Survivor by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Shortly after mid day on 26th August 1940, a Bolton-Paul Defiant of 264 Sqn claimed a victory that was to make history many decades later. Dornier Do.17Z2, Wk No 1160 of 7/III KG.3 had been part of a raiding force sent to attack targets in Essex. Attacked from below, the Do.17 suffered terminal damage and came to rest in the shallow waters of the Goodwin Sands, near Deal in Kent. Two of her crew died in the incident, but two others survived and became prisoners of war. In June 2013, over seventy years later, 5K+AR was raised from the water to be put on display at the RAF Museum in Hendon, becoming the only example of its type to survive anywhere in the world.

Vulcan at Ascension, 1982 by Ivan Berryman ( PC)

During the Falklands conflict in 1982, the tiny mid-Atlantic volcanic island of Ascension became the starting point for the Black Buck missions - a relay of tanker aircraft refuelling two Vulcan bombers to attack Argentine positions and damage the runway at Port Stanley to prevent the use of fast jets. At the time these were the longest range bombing missions in history. Additional colour added to enhance this previously black and white image.

Tribute to Erich Lowenhardt by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Tribute to Erich Lowenhardt by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Erich Lowenhardt was one of the most famous German Aces of World War One. A rival of the likes of Ernst Udet and Lothar von Richthofen in number of victories, he racked up an impressive 54 victories before his death in August 1918, caused by a failed parachute when he bailed out after a collision. He is depicted here, not in his final Fokker D.VII, but in an Albatros D.III, claiming one of his tally of 9 observation balloons - this one in May 1918. The fortunate balloon observer has managed to take to his parachute to escape this time, a measure the observers were often forced to employ by the German balloon busters.

Tragedy Over the Alps by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Tragedy Over the Alps by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

On the night of 13th August 1943, Short Stirling EF452 of 218 Sqn was part of a bombing raid to Turino in Italy. As the Squadron cleared the Alps the tail gunner of one of the aircraft mistook EF452 for an enemy fighter and immediately opened fire with great accuracy. The windshield fragmented and was partially blasted away, 3 engines were hit and one had to be shut down. The Navigator was hit and killed, the pilot was severely wounded taking hits in the face, right arm and chest, the bomb aimer and flight engineer were also wounded. The Flight Engineer pulled the slumped pilot off the controls and managed to pull the aircraft out of its dive at approximately 4000 feet. The Bomb Aimer took over the controls and turned south over the Mediterranean for another allied airfield knowing the aircraft wouldn’t be able to climb back over the Alps. Although grievously wounded, the young Pilot assisted the Bomb Aimer as best he could, slipping in and out of consciousness and scribbling notes,.........

Tracer fire streaks past two Dambuster Lancasters of No.617 Sqn as the decisive Barnes-Wallace bouncing bomb skips towards the dam in the moonlit background.
