The Naval Cadets of HMS Britannia - May 1895

It is in the Britannia training establishment at Dartmouth that our Lieutenants, Commanders, Captains and Admirals receive their first training as naval cadets, entering at from 13 to 14 years of age by nomination and competitive examination.  The Britannia course of study covers two years, and the cadets then pass out into the naval service to become midshipmen, according to classification for study and conduct.  The happy accident, that the first ship allotted to the cadet training service was the old Britannia of the Russian war, gave the institution its name, and none could be more appropriate.

Britannia's Embryo Bluejackets.

This picture of the boys assembled on the quarterdeck, and clustering at every available spot, to sit, or stand, or hang on, for their portraits, is a striking one, and affords evidence of the care which is bestowed upon them in the course of their naval training.  Although the instruction of a modern seaman is very different to that which obtained fifty years ago, the regularity of routine and plenty of open-air work is still the same, and very healthy conditions prevail.  The boys under training in these old hulks have now been transferred to more healthy settlements on shore, to which technical warships are attached.

Esquimalt

Esquimalt, near Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, was the major Royal naval base on the west coast of Canada.  A naval base was established  in 1848, and  in 1861 Esquimalt became the headquarters of the British pacific Station. Around 1885 a dry dock was constructed so that repairs could be carried out on ships up to small Cruisers.  the Royal navy pulled out of Esquimalt in 1905, (along with their other Canadian base at Halifax).  The Royal Canadian Navy  started in 1910 soon took over the Control of the the naval base in 1910.

The Pacific Squadron at Esquimalt Harbour pre 1902.

The Large Cruiser is probably HMS Warspite, if so it would be dated 1892, as she returned home the following year  (info supplied by George Schober)

Halifax

Halifax, Canada, 1900.

Photo taken by a crew member of HMS Quail, which was 'hulked in' at Halifax for one month.  HMS Quail arrived at Charlottetown in July / August 1900 with HMS Crescent and HMS Tribune.  Presumably this photo is from that cruise, and the two large ships visible here are HMS Crescent (right, flying flag) and HMS Tribune.

Wei Hai Wei

British Fleet leaving Wei Hai Wei, 16th September 1911.

Five destroyers on left are HMS Whiting, HMS Janus, HMS Otter, HMS Virago and probably HMS Fame.   Whiting, Janus and Otter have three funnels, so are the 1st, 4th and 5th ships from the left, although exactly which is which is unknown.  The second destroyer from the left has two funnels and so is probably HMS Fame.  The only other China Station destroyers to have two funnels were HMS  Handy, HMS Hart and HMS Taku.  While Taku was larger than the destroyer here, the other two, Hand and Hart were probably mostly together, suggesting this is HMS Fame.  The 4-funneled destroyer 3rd from the left is HMS Virago - the only other four funneled destroyer on the China station was HMS Sparrowhawk, sunk years prior to this photograph.

On the right are three cruisers; again from left to right, HMS Newcastle, HMS Minotaur and HMS Kent.
